Research Work
Small Island Developing States (SIDS) in the Pacific, including Tonga, are highly vulnerable to climate change, economic shocks, and dependency on foreign aid and remittances. The region’s geographic isolation, limited economic diversification, and susceptibility to extreme weather events demand robust international cooperation. Traditional institutions like the World Bank and IMF, alongside emerging players such as China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), have been central in addressing these challenges. However, concerns over debt sustainability, aid dependency, and long-term economic viability persist.
Currently, I am interested in investigating how international development, foreign aid, trade policies, and multilateral cooperation can foster sustainable economic growth, and climate resilience, and reduce economic vulnerability in Pacific SIDS.
